History of the Proof Silver American Eagle

The Silver American Eagle was designed by Adolph A. Weinman displaying Lady Liberty draped in an American flag, walking gracefully as the sun rises in the background. On the obverse, is heraldic eagle below 13 small stars, representing the 13 original colonies.

The first Proof Silver Eagles were first struck in 1986, the same year the first Uncirculated Silver Eagle was struck. However, the US Mint’s practice of minting proof silver coins is nothing new. The first US silver coins that are universally agreed to be proof strikes date back to 1817. The Smithsonian museum holds a collection of Proof Silver Coins dating back to 1818. Just like the Proof Silver Coins of today, these early 19^th century Proof Silver Coins used dyes and multiple strike techniques to create a beautiful mirror like finish.
