Platinum American Eagle

The 1 oz Platinum American Eagle coin was introduced by the US Mint in 1997 following authorization that came directly from US Congress. 1 ounce Platinum Eagle coins are the only platinum coins guaranteed for weight and purity by the US government. Per the act of Congress, these coins are deemed legal tender, giving the 1 oz issue a face value of $100, the largest face value of any US coin (though the value of the one ounce of platinum is much higher). The face value of the 1 ounce Platinum American Eagle is double the face value of the 1 ounce Gold American Eagle. Platinum American Eagles reverse designs are changed every year by the US Mint, adding another unique aspect to this coin.

The original design was in 1997 by US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. Mercanti’s design depicts the portrait of the Statue of Liberty gazing confidently forward, a universal symbol of freedom and opportunity. The obverse of the coin also includes the year it was minted with In God We Trust stamped beneath the year of mintage. The reverse image of the coin is different every year. The original 1997 reverse design created by US Mint sculptor Thomas D. Rogers featured a soaring eagle in front of a setting sun in the background.

This platinum coin comes in different denominations which include the 1 oz American Platinum Eagle ($100 face value), ½ oz American Platinum Eagle ($50 face value), ¼ oz American Platinum Eagle ($25 face value), and the 1/10 oz American Platinum Eagle ($10 face value).
