The 2020 edition, an even-numbered year of Gold Britannia features the familiar portrayal of Goddess Britannia, the grand lady warrior of resilience and strength, on its reverse. Britannia rules the waves. Her robe billows in the strong sea winds as she stands upright against the wind, firmly holding a trident spear while carrying in the other hand a shield and an olive branch. The obverse features the most current (2016) portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Second.

The first Gold Britannia Coin was released in 1987 to great national acclaim; and, for the rest of the decade, the Royal Mint used only gold to strike its increasingly popular Britannia bullion coins. As part of Gold Britannia’s grand 10th Anniversary Celebration, the series got a silver counterpart coin as well. Today, both gold and silver releases are popular worldwide.

Britannia is the embodiment of the national spirit appearing on coins for 2,000 years, ever since the Romans invaded the isles and claimed them as a province of Britannia; in fact, Britannia first appeared on the Roman coins of Emperor Hadrian around 119 AD. She was revived for the coinage of Charles II in 1672.

The Royal Mint responded to the growing global bullion market by announcing the Gold Britannia. Modern sculptor and coin designer Philip Nathan created an interpretation of Britannia that was perfect for the new coins: strong, majestic, and resilient. Nathan presented Britannia as the goddess standing upright against the wind and turbulent seas. Britannia is the face of the United Kingdom. She holds a trident, her head is protected by a helmet, and she stands ready with both a shield and an olive branch. She’s ready for anything and so is England.

The last few years have seen many changes to the design of the Britannia series. The most important design change was the 2016 introduction of the 5th official portrait of the Queen. No British monarch has ever received such an honor. Queen Elisabeth II is the real-world equivalent of the mythological heroine Britannia.

HOW ARE GOLD COINS DIFFERENT FROM GOLD ROUNDS?

Unlike gold rounds, gold coins, like the Gold Britannia, are sovereign gold bullion coins that actually have a face value. To be sure, the face value is greatly outstripped by the intrinsic value of their one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold. Gold coins may also have numismatic value, commanding a higher premium, while gold rounds are generally purchased only for whatever the prevailing spot price of gold happens to be on the day of sale. Britannia Gold coins are popular among investors and collectors. Gold Britannia coins, like the Maple Leaf and Gold Eagles, are sought after for their quality, beauty, and ease of liquidity.
